Rules for creating your own Army

These rules are version 1.1

Last updated 9 April 2001.

Follow these steps to create your army:

  1. Choose Race and Alignment

  2. Choose Regular units

  3. Choose Mercenaries

  4. Choose Allies

  5. Choose Ship

  6. Choose Heroes

  7. Choose Mana colour

  8. Check your army is valid

  9. Create your Army .PGS file using Darklords

1. Race and Alignment

All units have been given either no Racial Class or one of the following: Dwarf, Chaos, Elf, Gnoll, Human, Orc or Undead. This Racial Class is based on the 'Slayer Class' of the unit but also includes some amendments. All details are on the Unit Stats page.

Choose the overall race of your army from this table:

Race

Alignment

Dwarf Good (Dwarf)
or Evil (Dark Dwarf)
Demon / Chaos Evil
Elf Good (High Elf / Wood Elf)
or Evil (Dark Elf / Drow)
Gnoll Evil
Human Good or Evil
Orc Evil
Undead Evil

Alignment limits

bullet

A good army must not include any evil units.

bullet

An evil army must not include any good units.

Note: Either army may include neutral units.

Race limits

bullet

Dwarves, Elves and Orcs cannot be mixed (due to racial antipathy).

For example: if any army contains a Dwarf unit it cannot also contain an Orc unit or an Elf unit.

2. Regular Units

Choose 8 units to fill your 8 Regular slots. The following limitations apply:

bullet

For Gnolls, Dwarves and Chaos armies, 3 of the 8 Regulars must come from the appropriate race. (For example: for Gnolls, 3 units must be of the Gnoll racial type.)

bullet

For the other races 4 of the 8 Regulars must come from the appropriate race.

bullet

Alignment limits apply (see above).

bullet

Race limits apply (see above).

bullet

No duplications are allowed within the regular slots.

bullet

Units must be placed in ascending order of 'Army Setup Cost'.

bullet

Units marked 'Ally Only' must not be used.

bullet

Dwarves cannot include Dryads or Unicorns.

bullet

Gnolls cannot have Siege Engines (they are too stupid to have the technology).

bullet

Only Elves or Humans can have Elephants.

If you choose to include a unit in a regular slot that is of a different Racial Class to your the overall Racial Class of your army you will incur a 70 point penalty for each of these units.

You usually have 2000 points for creating your army, if you have a 70 point penalty then you will have only 1930 points available.

Example

Here is an example of how a player may attempt to fill his regular unit slots when he has chosen Elves as his race and good as his alignment:

  1. Elven Archers (Good Elf)

  2. Elven Cavalry (Good Elf)

  3. Elven Infantry (Good Elf)

  4. Iceguard (Good Elf)

  5. Giant Bats (Neutral)

  6. Light Infantry (Good Human)

  7. Knights (Good Human)

  8. Dark Pegasi* (Evil)

The player has satisfied the requirement of 4 units being from his chosen race (he could have chosen more though if he wished). The Giant Bats are fine because they do not belong to a race and are neutral. The Light Infantry and Knights are from the Human race and so deduct 70 points each from 2000 points. Therefore, the side may not cost more than 1860 points in total.

*The Dark Pegasi are not valid and so must be changed because although they do not belong to a race, they are Evil and the player chose Good alignment for his race.

3. Mercenaries

If you choose to have Mercenaries then you must follow these limitations:

bullet

No duplications are allowed within the Mercenary slots.

bullet

The unit in the first slot must not have a production time of over 2 turns.

bullet

Alignment limits apply (see above).

bullet

Race limits apply (see above).

bullet

Units marked 'Ally Only' must not be used.

bullet

Dwarves cannot include Dryads or Unicorns.

bullet

Only Elves or Humans can have Elephants.

4. Allies

Units in the Ally slots must follow these limitations:

bullet

No duplications are allowed within the Ally slots.

bullet

The unit in the first slot must not have a production time of over 2 turns.

bullet

Alignment limits apply (see above).

bullet

Race limits apply (see above).

bullet

Dwarves cannot include Treants.

bullet

Only Undead can include the Undead Dragon

5. The Ship

The only restriction for this is that only the Undead can choose the Boneship.

6. Heroes

The table below shows which heroes are evil, good and neutral. If your side is Good alignment then you can only chose Good or Neutral heroes. If your side is Evil alignment then you can only chose Evil or Neutral heroes.

Good

Neutral

Evil

Monk Alchemist Necromancer
Paladin Barbarian Shaman
Priest General Summoner
Bard Ranger Vampire
  Thief
  Warrior
  Wizard

7. Mana

Choose your Mana. Good sides are not allowed to use Black Mana and Evil sides are not allowed to use White Mana. However, both Good and Evil sides can use Grey Mana but it is more expensive. You don’t have to have Mana if you don’t want to.

8. Check your Army is Valid

When you have finished deciding what is in your army then use the Army Creation Spreadsheet to calculate your army cost. Make sure that it is 2000* points or less.

*Remember that if you used units from other races in your Regulars this figure will be lowered by 70 for each such unit.

9. Create your Army .PGS file using Darklords

Go here to see how this is done. Now you can use your new army in your own games or send it in to your gamesmaster to play in an e-mail game!
