FRAD Guide Rules for creating your own Army

These rules are version 3.0 BETA TEST (major revisions from v2.0 are noted in red).

Last updated 20 December 2001.

Follow these steps to create your army:

First Install the StormHeim units and K-Heroes both of which can be found on the downloads page. StormHeim units can be used alongside the original Darklords v1.02 units. K-Heroes REPLACE the original heroes.

Also download the latest Unit Statistics spreadsheet which has the StormHeim units on it and also some alignment changes.

  1. Choose your Army type (Race and Alignment)

  2. Choose Regular units

  3. Choose Mercenaries

  4. Choose Allies

  5. Choose Ship

  6. Choose Heroes

  7. Choose Mana colour

  8. Check your army is valid

  9. Create your Army .PGS file using Darklords

1. Race and Alignment

All units have been given either no Racial Class or one of the following: Dwarf, Elf, Gnoll, Human, Orc or Undead. This Racial Class is based on the 'Slayer Class' of the unit but also includes some amendments. All details are in a spreadsheet (on the Downloads page) or on the Unit Stats page. (Not updated yet!)

Choose the race of your army from this table:

Army Type

Race

Alignment

Good Dwarf Dwarf Good
Evil Dwarf Dwarf Evil
Good Elf Elf Good
Dark Elf (Drow) Elf Evil
Gnoll Gnoll Evil
Good Human Human Good
Evil Human Human Evil
Orc Orc Evil
Undead Undead Evil
Chaos/Demon* Mixed Evil

*Special army - see this page: Special Army rules

Alignment limits

bullet

A good army must not include any evil units.

bullet

An evil army must not include any good units.

Note: Either army may include neutral units.

Race limits

Dwarves, Elves and Orcs can never be mixed. This is due to racial antipathy - these races will never fight alongside each other.

For example: if any army contains a Dwarf unit it cannot also contain an Orc unit or an Elf unit.

Dwarves and Elves can co-exist in an army but no army may contain both Dwarf units and Elf units in the regular slots.

(Orcs cannot be mixed with Dwarves or Elves because now Elves and Dwarves can only be Good.)

2. Regular Units

Choose units to fill your Regular slots. The following limitations apply:

bullet

For Gnolls and Dwarves armies, 3 Regulars must come from the appropriate race. (For example: for Gnolls, 3 units must be of the Gnoll racial type.)

bullet

For the other races 4 Regulars must come from the appropriate race.

bullet

Alignment limits apply (see above).

bullet

Race limits apply (see above).

bullet

Elves and Dwarves must not be mixed in regular slots.

bullet

No duplications are allowed within the regular slots.

bullet

Only Undead can include the Undead Dragon

bullet

Units should be placed in ascending order of 'Army Setup Cost'. (Note: this actually makes the total cost of the army less!)

If you choose to include a unit in a regular slot that is of a different Racial Class to your the overall Racial Class of your army you will incur a 100 point penalty for each of these units.

You usually have 2000 points for creating your army, if you have a 100 point penalty then you will have only 1900 points available to spend.

3. Mercenaries

If you choose to have Mercenaries then you must follow these limitations:

bullet

No duplications are allowed within the Mercenary slots.

bullet

The unit in the first slot must not have a production time of over 3 turns.

bullet

Alignment limits apply (see above).

bullet

Race limits apply (see above).

bullet

Only Undead can include the Undead Dragon

4. Allies

Units in the Ally slots must follow these limitations:

bullet

No duplications are allowed within the Ally slots.

bullet

The unit in the first slot must not have a production time of over 3 turns.

bullet

Alignment limits apply (see above).

bullet

Race limits apply (see above).

bullet

Only Undead can include the Undead Dragon

5. The Ship

The only restriction for this is that only the Undead can choose the Boneship.

6. Banned Units

The following units must not be used in armies created following the FRAD Guide rules.

Banned Unit

Reason why it is banned

Phoenix (a StormHeim unit) In legend there is only ever one Phoenix in existence so therefore it is silly to have it as a Warlords unit.

(Besides it is fairly rubbish anyway!)

7. Heroes

The table below shows which heroes are Evil, Good and Neutral. If your side is Good alignment then you can only choose Good or Neutral heroes. If your side is Evil alignment then you can only chose Evil or Neutral heroes.

All Heroes must be K-Heroes taken from the K4 Heroes download. Get it here.

Do NOT choose any Hero that does not begin with the letter 'K'.

Good

Neutral

Evil

Monk Alchemist Necromancer
Paladin Barbarian Shaman
Priest Bard Summoner
Ranger General Vampire
Thief
Warrior
Wizard

8. Mana

Choose your Mana. Good sides are not allowed to use Black Mana and Evil sides are not allowed to use White Mana. However, both Good and Evil sides can use Grey Mana (but it is more expensive). You don’t have to have Mana if you don’t want to.

9. Check your Army is Valid

When you have finished deciding what is in your army then use the updated (when completed!) Army Creation Spreadsheet to calculate your army cost. Make sure that it is 2000* points or less.

*Remember that if you used units from other races in your Regulars this figure will be lowered by 100 for each such unit.

10. Create your Army .PGS file using Darklords

Go here to see how this is done. Now you can use your new army in your own games or send it in to your gamesmaster to play in an e-mail game!
